Spring Is Here!!

Greetings!

Well, I'm not sure if any of us thought it would come after this winter, but spring has sprung. It will not be long before we are running around outside in the sunshine. It has really has been fun watching the kids progress throughout the year and the rest of the year will be action packed. We have the Get in Gear Fit for Fun run coming up on April 30th and Field Day on May 20th.

We just finished our first swimming unit and again, the students amaze me on how fast they can pick things up and how brave they are in attempting new skills. We are now moving into the Manipulatives Unit in which we will be introducing floor hockey and racquet activies such as badminton and tennis.

Have a great day!

Jump Rope For Heart

The Jump Rope For Heart event is fast approaching and your children have received their donation packets. This annual event raises money for the American Heart Association and traditionally Breck does very well. On January 28th 3rd and 4th grade students will perform jump rope skills in the Anderson Gym and parents are invited to come and watch. 3rd grade will be performing from 11:45-12:25 and 4th grade will go from 2:20-3:00. Our theme this year is The Big Ten.

Our school goal is to raise at least $8000, so that averages out to $1000 per class. This is a very attainable goal and we encourage everyone to participate in this cause!

Welcome Back!!

We are back from break and I hope everyone enjoyed their time off and had some quality time with family and friends. My PE classes are in our second and last skating unit of the year. We will be in this unit until January 20th and then we will begin gymnastics. I am always amazed at how fast our beginner skaters are able to pick it up. Students that could barely stand on the ice before break are now scooting around the ice without any assistance. Many thanks go out to the parents who are able to come help tie skates.

I can't believe the year is half over, but I am excited for the remainder of the year. It is an absolute privilege to work with your children.

Have a great day!

Skating Update

Well, our first skating unit is wrapping up and it has been such a treat to watch our beginner skaters progress. Students who were not able to stand up at the start of the unit are now skating without any assistance. The resiliency of these students is truly outstanding. We will wrap up the skating unit on Wednesday, Dec. 1st. Then it is back to the gym with our Manipulatives II unit.

Here is a video of some of our 4th grade student skating!

November News

November is here and the Holidays are right around the corner. Your children are busy learning new skills and playing games in physical eduaction class. We are currently in the Manipulatives I unit. This unit consists of throwing and catching, as well as, rolling and fielding skills.

A reminder that skating is just around the corner. Our class will begin on November 11th. Make sure you children have their skates, helmets, jackets, snow pants, and mittens so they are ready to get right out on the ice. No one will be allowed on the ice with out skates or a helmet. NO EXCEPTIONS!

Have a great day!

Fitness Unit

Greetings!!

Wow!! The start of the year has flown by. We are in the middle of our fitness unit and starting to get the tests completed. Your children are encouraged to do their personal best in every test and they are giving their best effort. We will be finishing our fitness unit next Tuesday and I hope to have everyone's tests recorded. Encourage your kids to do their best!!

Thank you for your compliments on the song I performed on Back to School Night. The lyrics are below.

Have a great day!
Mr. Martin

Here we stand in the gym
Learning to kick and throw
Now we run, skip and jump
We are always on the go

We learn the rules of the game
And we learn to play fair
Teamwork & respect are what we say
There is the curriculum of care

Hey! You've got to live an active life x2

Don't forget to bring your gym shoes
Or you won't get to play
Safety first in our classroom
Is what teachers say

Skating, swimming and gymnastics
Are a few things we do
Nutrition and wellness are also covered
For a healthier you

Hey! You've got to live an active life

Welcome Back!!

We are looking forward to an eventful and fun filled year in PE this year. As your children get into the routine of school and the new six day schedule, there are a few reminders that I would like to pass along to you. Make sure that your children have their gym shoes. This is for their safety. Casual shoe do not provide the support and traction that fitness shoes do, thus increasing the chance for injury. Parents of girls, please make sure that your daughters are wearing shorts so they can participate in PE without their jumpers. Jumpers can get in the way of some of the activities we participate in throughout the year. I will give updates on the upcoming units as the year progresses.

Our first unit will be fitness testing. In this unit your children will participate in the President's Fitness Challenge, which consists of the following tests; Pull-ups, Curl-ups (Sit-ups), Mile Run (1/4 mile for 1st grade), Flexed-arm Hang, Sit and Reach, and Shuttle Run. Students will be tested now and again in the spring to see how much they improve.

I look forward to a great year with your children. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me at anytime.

Mr. Martin
