Segovia-week 1

Our group left Minneapolis on Thursday, June 19th and was greeted by the beautiful Spanish architecture of the Madrid International Airport on Friday.

On Friday the 20 we had a walking tour of the city and orientation after meeting our extremely hospitable families. On Saturday we continued our orientation to the city and familiarized ourselves with important meeting spots throughout the city, including the historic Roman Acueduct, El Plaza Mayor, and el Centro de estudios hispánicos, the language institute where students are taking three hours of classes daily.

Sunday the 22 was spent hiking in the Sierra de Guadarrama mountain close to La Granja (about fifteen minutes from Segovia). After the three hour hike, we were invited to the home of our director, Ricardo D'Augusta, for a wonderful brunch. Breck students and Ricardo's two children, Acu and Ricardo, all played soccer afterward.

The weekend was spent relaxing and spending time with out families. The students are all enjoying their time at home, while experiencing an entirely different and unique cultur.

After our first set of classes (9:00-12:00) on Monday the 23 we toured the Alcázar, an impressive Muslim fortress dating back to the 11th century.

After classes on Tuesday the 24th we went El Escorial via Segovia's city bus system, one of the most efficient public transportation systems in Spain, to see the vast summer palace of Felipe II. This incredible palace is a wonderful example of sixteenth century renaissance architecture.

On the 25th we toured the Catedral. The Catedral, conveniently located in Plaza Mayor, is one of the most renouned edifices in Segovia. The enormous Catedral is a shining example of Gothic architecture and has served as a place of for about 500 years.

On the 26th we toured La Judería, the centuries old Jewish Quarter of Segovia.

On Friday the 27th we toured La Granja and its beautiful gardens, which were graced with extravagant cascading fountains and the Royal Bourbon Palace.

On Saturday the 28, we all woke up early to meet at the bus station at 7:15 (only 5 people were late, no names mentioned) in order to catch the early bus to Madrid, Spain's capital city.

CHECK BACK TOMORROW FOR MORE PICTURES AND UPDATES ON OUR FIRST EVER TRIP TO SPAIN!!!

¡Hasta pronto!
