News From Mrs. Zosel

Jam & Jelly Jamboree!
May 10-24

Families in need often depend on school lunches. When summer vacation begins the need for "kid friendly" food grows even greater at our neighborhood food shelf. Food shelves are able to buy peanut butter in bulk, but the jam and jelly shelves are often bare.

If your family would like to donate jam or jelly please send to school May 10-24.

No glass containers please.

The food shelf is also in need of these items:
empty egg cartons
paper grocery sacks
Swim suits for the clothing closet.

We will happily accept and deliver these items to S.T.E.P - St. Louis Park Emergency Program

Families who use our local food shelf often are unable

If your family would like to donate, students may bring items to school
April 6-15.

Thank you for your GENEROSITY!

A Message from our Chaplain

A Seder Invitation - a Volunteer Opportunity for Parents

This spring we will host two model seders, and we need your help. A seder is the traditional Jewish meal that tells the story of the Hebrew peoples escape from slavery in Egypt. This experience is an extraordinary way for the children to hear, see, and taste this journey of liberation. The seders will be held, 8:35- 9:15 AM in our Middle School Dining Room.

Fri. April 8 - gr. 1 & 2

Fri. April 15 - gr. 3 & 4

Breck parent Nate Garvis will be leading the seder, assisted by students. We need one adult table host for each table of students to help serve the food.

Please contact me by Fri. Mar. 4 if you would like to serve as a table host for one or both seders.
Shalom, Chaplain Nan Zosel, 763-381-8255 nan.zosel@breckschool.org

January News

Our first week back is off to a great start! The children returned to school happy to see their friends but also ready to get on with the work of first grade. I really notice how confident they are as first graders. This is the time in first grade we generally see significant growth in academic and social skills.

The children were excited to report about all the books they read over break. The reading logs look quite impressive. You can definitely see the practice paying off! Thank you for your help with this. As always, if you would like me to send “just right books” for your child to read, let me know.

Our focus this month in writing is “realistic fiction”. We’ve talked about “good story starts” and have practiced writing a number of them. We know that good story starts: introduce characters, tells where, tells when, gives clues and makes a reader want to read more. We also know that realistic fiction has:

• settings that could be real,

• characters that are people who behave like real people,

• a believable problem solved in a believable way.

In math we are continuing our work with tens-and-ones groupings to 100. We are using ten sticks, dimes and pennies to see the connections. We are practicing our math facts by playing games.

Our next topic of study will be oceans and islands. This unit will include the study of oceans, islands and sea life. As part of our study we will be going to the Minnesota Zoo on Monday, January 31st. During this time of the year, reading and writing become more integrated with our study of oceans and islands. The children will be reading books about oceans and sea life.

Social Studies is an integral part of our everyday lives at school. We continue to talk about current events, family news, school events and special holidays. This month we will be learning about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and will focus discussions and activities around his life story and the contributions he made to our society.

Our January CARE theme is “joyfulness”. The theme was kicked off at Community Meeting on Wednesday with the book and song What a Wonderful World. We are thinking about joyfulness a little different then we think about happiness.

Just a reminder... We will be going outside for recess in this cold weather when the wind chill temperatures permit, so be sure your child has everything they need to be safe and warm.

A Note from Mrs. Zosel

A note from Nan Zosel:

Lower School December Giving Opportunity:

Winter Weather Wear Collection

Our students have been learning about the importance of "welcoming the stranger" and the value of hospitality. We are collecting winter weather gear for refugees who have recently arrived in Minnesota from warm climates, such as Burma and Somalia. From boots to snow suits, mittens to mufflers, new and gently used items - all items are welcome. Please do NOT wrap. As always, this donation opportunity is optional. Students may deliver gifts to the stages in the Lower School Commons through Th. Dec. 16. Thank You!

December News

Dear Families,

Sitting down to write the monthly mailing letter always brings me to the realization that the school year goes by too quickly. It is already December with only weeks until winter break. We have had a busy 3 days in December and these last two weeks will be filled with activities at school and probably at home too. It is so important at these busy times to keep our routines, especially bedtime, as consistent as possible. I truly appreciate your efforts!

The next two weeks are filled with many activities.

•Monday, December 6- skating

•Tuesday, December 7th- All School Chapel and skating

•Wednesday, December 8- skating

•Thursday, December 9th Day 6 - Art!

•Friday, December 10th - skating.

•Monday, December 13- Candy house making party

•Tuesday, December 14th- skating

•Wednesday, December 15- skating

•Thursday, December 16th last day of skating and- is the holiday music program. The concert begins at 6:00. Have your child meet in our classroom at 5:45. Please plan ahead for this event, because things get frantic if the children are not together before the program. This is a dress-up evening for the children. They don’t need to wear their uniforms .

•Friday, December 17h – Day 6 - Art.

Thank you for all your support throughout the year. I wish you a joyful holiday season.

Sincerely,

Bobbie
